Can You Use Herbs to Get Off Thyroid Meds?

Navigating Herbs and Supplements

When it comes to managing your health with herbs and supplements, I’ve got a question for you: Are you using them as medications or to support your body’s wellness goals?

At first glance, these might seem similar, but these two mindsets are quite different.

Medications vs. Wellness Support

Let’s talk about the difference between using herbs and supplements as medications versus using them to support your body’s natural functions. It’s a trap easy to fall into—I’ve experienced it myself. Western medicine often promotes a pill-for-every-ill approach, fostering a reliance on pharmaceuticals.

However, the events over the past few years along with growing distrust in the pharmaceutical industry, have led many to seek alternatives to medications. Despite this shift, the ingrained mindset remains: when something’s wrong, a pill is the solution. But is this always the case?

Seeking Natural Solutions for Hypothyroidism

Here’s an example I’ve seen quite a bit. Upon receiving a hypothyroid diagnosis, the first solution is to find more thyroid hormones. This is precisely the approach taken by traditional Western medicine—prescribing Synthroid or Levothyroxine. It’s a straightforward solution, readily available through pharmaceuticals.

However, for those wary of the pharmaceutical industry, the quest for increased thyroid hormone takes a different route—a natural one. Enter natural desiccated thyroid (NDT), sourced from cows or pigs. This thyroid gland is dried, ground, and encapsulated, offering a natural alternative to synthetic hormones. It was first “discovered” in the 1880s and has been in use since then.

NDT is unique in that it can be from a pharmaceutical company (Armour and WP Thyroid are NDT) or it can be purchased as a supplement. Often, if it’s a supplement, at least in the USA, the T4 and T3 have been removed.

So in this hypothyroid example, both pharmaceuticals and their natural counterparts aim to achieve the same outcome: elevating hormone levels. The difference lies in the source and approach, catering to varied preferences and philosophies.

Exploring Natural Alternatives for Blood Sugar Regulation

Another example where individuals seek medication replacements in the form of vitamins, herbs, or supplements is in regulating blood sugar levels.

Traditionally, metformin is a go-to pharmaceutical option for stabilizing blood sugar. However, for those seeking natural alternatives, berberine can give some of the same blood sugar-regulating effects.

Platforms like Fullscript provide access to quality supplements and herbs, catering to those exploring natural solutions.

From Pharmaceutical Medications to Natural Herbs and Supplements

This mindset shift mirrors the ingrained belief in a “pill for every ill,” albeit with a twist—opting for natural solutions over pharmaceuticals. The desire for a convenient capsule or tablet remains, albeit directed towards natural remedies.

Step Off the Nail

When someone has pain, perhaps they use the “pill for every ill” mindset and reach for ibuprofen. But what if the pain is because they are stepping on a nail? The obvious solution isn’t merely masking the pain with medication; it’s addressing the underlying cause—removing the nail!

Or if a fire alarm is ringing, you don’t put in earplugs, right? No, you put out the fire!

This mindset embodies the essence of holistic thinking, focusing on the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. It entails examining various factors, including diet and environment, to understand why symptoms manifest and how to address them comprehensively.

Holistic health and functional medicine are not about applying temporary fixes; they are all about going deeper to uncover root causes and implement sustainable solutions.

Moving Beyond the ‘Pill for Every Ill’ Mentality

You can learn to look beyond symptoms and seek the root cause of health challenges. By addressing imbalances across body, mind, spirit, diet, and environment, true healing can occur—not just temporary relief.

This approach empowers you to take charge of your health, fostering long-term well-being and vitality. It’s about more than just managing symptoms; it’s about nurturing holistic wellness from the inside out.

Mindset Shift in Blood Sugar Regulation

So what about the other example, blood sugar? Because blood sugar extremes are one root causes of Hashimoto’s, we want to know how to address it.

Taking berberine or a glucose control blend of herbs is going to help because it is going to get you that solution, at least according to the research, right? It’s going to help you control your blood sugar. And when you control your blood sugar, then that helps all the things that imbalanced blood sugar impacts.

When your blood sugar goes really high, and when it goes really low, those are both stressors, they both cause problems in the body, different stressors or different problems, depending on if it’s going high versus low.

Berberine vs Glucose Control

But in that first mindset (taking herbs instead of meds,) you’re not changing anything else. You’re not addressing why is your blood sugar going high? Why is it going low? Is it because you ate some really fast carbs—things that quickly spike your blood. That means it also drops really precipitously.

I do have an episode all about blood sugar and thyroid problems and why it matters that you manage your blood sugar. I talk about both high and low blood sugar in there. And then I help you figure out how to address those.

The solution is not necessarily about taking a pill or supplement. Jessie has helpful social media posts and a great book, Glucose Revolution: The Life-Changing Power of Balancing Your Blood SugarI use some of her tips and outlined them in episode 10. You want to do everything you can in order to help your body be successful in being healthy.

That is my main goal. I want to be healthy. I’m sure that’s your goal too.

Energy is a Currency of Health

We all have different measurements of health. But for most of us, a currency of health is energy.

I want to have good enough energy to live the life that I want. As a mom of four active boys and as a wife to a very active husband, I cannot be stuck in bed all day.

I still get migraines with my period. (I’ve been working on many different ways to help that.) The days when I am stuck in bed and I cannot keep up with my family, I feel less.

Value Beyond Circumstances

When you don’t have the energy or when pain is stopping you from living your life, maybe you also feel less. That’s a miserable place to be because we are designed to be valuable and to impact those around us.

Can you still have an impact even when your body is not working well? Yes, you can. There is nothing that takes away your value. You are valuable because you are you. You are valuable because you are made in God’s image and because God says you’re valuable.

A thumbnail of a PDF download containing many verses about your intrinsic value and how much God loves you.Our feelings can change. Other people can say things. We can say things. We can tell lies, but God tells the truth and God says you are valuable. If you need scripture references for that, I have some in a PDF that you can download, print, and review.
